"Understanding Blood Pressure:
Definition, Measurement, and Healthy Ranges"

what is Blood Pressure?

What is Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the blood vessels as it circulates through the body.

Measurement of Blood Pressure

It is usually measured using two numbers: the systolic pressure and the diastolic pressure.

Understanding Systolic and Diastolic Pressure

Systolic pressure is the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats and pumps blood out of the heart, whereas diastolic pressure is the pressure in the arteries when the heart is at rest between beats.

Using a Sphygmomanometer for Blood Pressure Measurement

Blood pressure is measured with a device called a sphygmomanometer, which consists of an inflatable cuff, a meter, and a bulb for inflation.

The cuff is wrapped around the upper arm and inflated until it temporarily stops the flow of blood in the artery.

The pressure in the cuff is slowly released while listening for the sound of blood flow using a stethoscope.

This is done until there is no longer any sound of blood flow, which indicates that the cuff pressure has dropped below the systolic pressure of the artery.

Interpreting Blood Pressure Readings

The pressure where the sound of blood flow disappears is the systolic blood pressure measurement. The cuff pressure is then slowly and continuously released, until the sound of blood flow returns.

When the sound of blood flow returns, this indicates that the cuff pressure is now below the diastolic pressure of the artery. The pressure where the sound of blood flow returns is the diastolic blood pressure measurement.

Healthy Blood Pressure Range

A healthy blood pressure reading is generally considered to be less than 120/80 mmHg.

A blood pressure reading of 120-139/80-89 mmHg is considered prehypertensive, while a reading of 140/90 mmHg or higher is considered hypertension.
